Ford Ranger or Chevy Colorado: Which Mid-Size Truck Reigns Supreme in Western Michigan?

Ford Ranger and Chevy Colorado are both mid-size pickups that are compelling alternatives to everyday full-size trucks. In fact, each has its respective merits with day-laborers, tradespeople, and off-roaders, making both all-around favorites. But only one pulls ahead where a west Michigan haul demands. See why that's the new Ford Ranger right here at Barber Ford!

Ford Ranger vs. Chevy Colorado

Ford Ranger is a better accelerator and puts out more turning and pulling power. It's standard and best-in-class 270-horsepower 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine is the better choice for tough terrain outside of Zeeland MI, as it's capable of 310 pound-feet of torque.

  • The standard engine in Chevy Colorado is a 2.5-liter I4 that produces only 200 horsepower and 191 pound-feet of torque. Even its available 308-horsepower, 3.6-liter V6 can only put out 275 pound-feet, and the 2.8-liter Turbo-Diesel option, though it may put out 369 pound-fee of torque, comes rated at only 186 horsepower.

On tough jobs in Allendale, Ford Ranger is better-equipped to tow and haul. SuperCab 4x2 builds can lug payloads of 1,860 pounds max and shoulder trailerfuls of 7,500 pounds max. Both numbers are tops of the class.

  • Chevy Colorado can only haul 1,574 pounds max, not to mention tow only 3,500 pounds max with a 2.5-liter I4. Even with a V6, it can only tow 7,000 pounds max. You can get a rating up to 7,700 pounds, but investment in the costly diesel engine is required.

Ford Ranger has more safety features for protection on the roads of Hudsonville and Byron Center between jobs. Pre-collision assist and auto emergency brakes come standard. So do a lane-keeping system, lane-keep warning, lane departure warnings, reverse sensing, and a blind-spot monitor with trailer coverage that's exclusive in the class. They're built into XLT and Lariat trims. Lariat also gets standard adaptive cruise control.

  • Chevy Colorado LT trims offer a Safety Package with a forward collision alert system, lane departure warning, and rear park assist, but it's only optional, and the lineup itself isn’t as diverse on safety features as Ford Ranger.
